The Tragedy of Clinging to Calories
There is an idea that has long been passed down quietly and imperceptibly between people. It exists among peers, between parents and children, in casual conversations after meals, and even in classrooms related to nutrition. At the center of this idea is one thing: calories.
Before you know it, when you are holding a menu in your hand, the thought of “high-calorie food” rises to the surface. At the same time, the warning of “I cannot keep gaining weight” begins to sound in your mind. And so, even after finally placing your order, a layer of disappointment quietly settles in your heart.
As I remember it, calorie education seemed to reach its peak in the 1980s. I do not know which master first ushered in the era of calorie accounting, but from that point on, the human body was imagined as a calorie account: calories consumed minus calories burned equals calories stored.
The weight-loss market flourished on this very foundation. People spent large sums of money on diet meals, weight-loss exercises, and all kinds of calorie-management methods. Forty years have passed, yet that linear concept still occupies the minds of countless adults, refusing to disappear.
Perhaps that calorie handbook is still sitting on the bookshelves of many women today. Before inviting friends over for a meal, one might still open the book and check the calorie reminders, hoping to avoid complaints from sisters who fear gaining weight after a gathering.
Those delicious foods classified as high-calorie have long been placed on a distant shelf in your life. And yet, the ring of fat around your body remains. The visceral fat number displayed on the body composition scale still makes it difficult to feel truly satisfied.
This linear way of thinking has actually already been interrupted by a certain experience in our everyday lives. We simply have never understood its deeper meaning.
It happens in the contrast between feeling extremely hungry an hour ago and feeling completely not hungry now. The key point is this: during that time, no food entered the body through the mouth.
“The body goes to the refrigerator and finds food.” This is how I describe it in class. The refrigerator I refer to is the glycogen stored in the liver. This is the emergency solution the body uses before opening the freezer and mobilizing fat.
We must pause here and carefully untangle the details of this bodily drama.
First, what signal makes us feel hungry? The answer is hormones. Next, what instruction tells the body to first find food in the liver? The answer is also hormones. Finally, what message makes us stop feeling hungry? The answer remains hormones.
Once we clarify the operating system inside the body and then compare it with the calorie line mentioned earlier, we discover an almost earth-shaking truth: the straight line of calories that has created nearly half a century of confusion in health thinking has already been thrown into the trash by the truth of the body’s inner operation.
Please continue to think deeply: how many people have had their understanding of the body destroyed by these mistaken ideas? Conversely, how many highly profitable pharmaceutical and weight-loss industries have been created by them?
This line of thinking, deeply rooted in people’s minds, has an even greater level of influence. Because it ignores hormones, because it overlooks insulin, it draws out countless lines of mistaken judgment. As a result, more people are led by erroneous concepts, and more people are pulled into the bottomless pit of medical consequentialism.
Because the calorie concept is so deeply rooted, a lifestyle demand to burn calories emerged, namely exercise. Then came the demand to reduce calories, namely dietary restriction.
As a result, “eat less” and “exercise more” seem to have become a reminder embedded in human genes. No matter how one evaluates this doctrine, it cannot be said to be completely unreasonable. Its greatest problem is that it cannot solve the most fundamental issue.
The most fundamental issue lies in the balance system within our body: the endocrine system.
This system exists independently of the doctrine of calories. In other words, between calorie intake and calorie expenditure, there is still an information system unrelated to calorie calculation. It is not merely mathematics, nor merely chemistry. It is closer to the body’s physical operation of frequency and physiological operation of information. Hidden within it is nature’s law of maintaining balance.
The greatest harm caused by the habit of eating constantly every day is that it continuously interferes with this balance system. Human beings seek only to satisfy the appetite of the mouth, without realizing that this day-after-day interference is already predicting a tremendous future backlash from the body.
When you continue to judge fasting through linear thinking, the claim of “muscle loss” from fitness trainers will appear. They do not know that fasting is a necessary process through which the body’s balance system reorganizes itself. They do not know that fasting is an important journey through which various hormones in the body return to balance.
In truth, the fear of fasting also comes from linear thinking. People only see the distance between “being used to eating” and “having to not eat,” yet they ignore the body’s balancing mechanism. They only see an empty stomach, but fail to see that the body is forming a new perception through hormones. They only see the surface act of not eating, but overlook the bodily awareness we must truly respect.
Between people, there is the question of whether frequencies are compatible. Values form a frequency of thought. When frequencies are incompatible, people do not easily get along, nor do they easily work together.
The body’s balance system also carries the concern of whether frequencies are compatible. Impedance is the final response when frequencies become incompatible. We only care about calculating calories at the dining table, without knowing that the body’s need for frequency is being continuously violated by us.
If you still remember the doctrine of the anti-toxin doctor, he tells us to work hard to avoid substances that poison the body, and also reminds us to avoid raw food. What this passive education overlooks is precisely the body’s active inner ability to handle balance. Under the doctrine of prevention, health cultivation loses its optimistic and progressive spirit.
Once the body’s information system is isolated, these linear forms of education all sound reasonable. They are consistent with the logic of medical education that only deals with symptoms. As a result, those who are ill will never truly know how they lost their connection with the body step by step.
Thinking calmly, we all hope that the future of humanity will become more prosperous. We all hope that our children and grandchildren will live more abundant and happier lives. But if we do not uproot the wrong ideas in our minds and the wrong habits in our lives, perhaps our children have already, through imperceptible influence, copied our conceptual modules and lifestyle patterns.
At the end of this article, allow me to bring forward the hormone that has long been coldly overlooked by us. It is the one we are all now very familiar with: insulin.
This is not to deny emergency care or necessary medical treatment. Rather, it is to remind us that we must think seriously: what effect does it have on the body when the pancreas releases large amounts of insulin many times a day, day after day, over a long period of time? Many severe diseases of civilization are almost inseparable from the consequences of this lifestyle pattern.
When the focus is wrong, the result is loss of focus. For decades, we have kept our attention fixed on calories, and in the end, we have lost the most important connection with our own body. The balancing task carried out by the endocrine system has long been neglected by us. The messages sent by the body through hormones have also been ignored again and again.
As a result, imbalance continues to occur, while we remain trapped in that same linear way of thinking, continuing to ruin our lives with mistaken ideas.
